Calcium, in it’s free ionic form is a cofactor for several clotting factors (it was called Factor IV, historically). Some compounds can associate with calcium, greatly reducing the free ionized form. Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid are common chelators used as anticoagulants.
